Short biography

Anastasia Z. Kalea is a Professor (Teaching) in the Division of Medicine at University College London (UCL). She is a Registered Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA, Advance HE).

Her research work has contributed to answering key questions on the role of trace elements, phytochemicals, and advanced glycation products in vascular function, diabetes complications, hypertension and obesity.  Prof Kalea’s research interests also extend to personalized nutrition, inflammation and cardiometabolic health, and public health nutrition in the context of food sustainability. She has been successful against research competition in her discipline and invited as a plenary speaker in national and international conferences. She publishes and acts as an Editor and Reviewer for several peer-reviewed scientific journals in Nutrition high impact scientific journals, and holds positions on the Board of Directors in scientific and professional societies, including the Nutrition Society.

Prof Kalea has developed learning activities on 19 different programmes at UCL and other institutions and supervised the development, delivery, evaluation and continuous improvement of core and optional modules including the integration of nutrition teachings in the medical education curriculum. She is an Academic Programme Lead for the MSc in Obesity and Clinical Nutrition and leads modules for the MSc in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition, MSc in Dietetics, BSc in Nutrition and Medical Sciences teaching across all nutrition programmes. She serves as an Academic advisor for the UCL consortium on the UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training (UKFS-CDT).

She has designed and delivered new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Nutrition and Dietetics that received accreditation from professional bodies and actively engages as an external examiner and scrutineer of taught programmes. She has received Global Engagement Funding from UCL for a collaborative MSc teaching programme in Nutrition and Public health with United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and is an Honorary Professor for the UAEU College of Medicine & Health Sciences.
